A soft water loop is a pre-installed pipe that creates a dedicated bypass designed for a water softener to connect to — like a power outlet waiting for an appliance.

Many newer homes have these installed during construction. How to check: Look in your mechanical room or utility area near your water heater for a loop of ¾" copper or PEX pipe that comes out of the wall and goes back in, often with shutoff valves on each side.
